Twenty-one Elgin Academy students from the Classes of 2015 and 2016 who took the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Exams last May have earned the designation of AP Scholar or higher in recognition of their exceptional achievement on these exams.  The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to possibly earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 18,000 schools worldwide participate in the AP Program.

Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP. The AP Scholar designation is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students' performance on AP Exams.

Ten students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher. From the class of 2016:  Frankie Bisconti, Victoria Teik, Melissa Trudrung and Devin Üner. From the Class of 2015: Ervin James Baldwin, Annabelle Heisley, Danielle Mastricola, Quin Phalen, Nathan Schafer, and Alysson Wittmeyer.

There were two recipients of the AP Scholar with Honor award, given to students who earn an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. From the Class of 2016:  Emma May. From the Class of 2015:  Alison Georgescu.

The AP Scholar with Distinction status was granted to 10 students who earned an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  From the Class of 2016:  Valerie Scimeca and Sarah Summers. From the Class of 2015:   Mustafa Alimumal, Rose Aubery, Avery Duan, Erin Hughes, Cassie Kemmler, Benjamin Oriold, Margaret Veltri, and Xiaoya Zhu.

Advanced Placement courses are offered at Elgin Academy in the following subjects:  Biology, Calculus AB, Chemistry, European History, Psychology, Studio Art and U.S. History.  Additionally, students may choose to prepare for AP examinations in the following subjects:  Calculus BC, Computer Science, English Language, English Literature, Environmental Science, French Language, Latin, Music Theory, Physics, Spanish Language, Statistics, and U.S. Government and Politics.

Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation's leading liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,600 colleges and universities annually receive AP grades.

Congratulations to Seana Gould Dulabaum (2021) for her recent selection as 2nd place winner in the “2015 First Amendment Arts & Essay Contest” sponsored by the Chicago Tribune and the Anti-Defamation League. In a field of over 1,500 essays, the judges agreed that Seana’s work stood out as one of the very best within an impressive field of 7th and 8th grade writers from all over the Chicagoland area. Seana’s essay took a very personal approach to the prompt: Describe or portray how one or more of the five freedoms in the First Amendment personally affects your daily life. She compared the freedoms she enjoys today with those denied people like her mother who experienced life behind the Berlin Wall during the 1980s.

Seana’s recognition includes a $1000 college scholarship and an invitation for Seana, her parents, and her English teacher, Mrs. Veltri, to attend the Freedom Award Dinner, where Seana will read her essay aloud to the 500+ expected attendees.

Congratulations on your achievements, Seana, and thank you for giving us another reason to be proud of you.

Congratulations to our Illinois State Scholars!

Elgin Academy is pleased to announce that seven seniors, representing 21% of the Class of 2016, have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), the state agency committed to helping students and families navigate the college application and financial aid process, bestows this prestigious recognition to the top 10% of Illinois high school students annually. This year over 19,000 students across the state, hailing from 652 different high schools, were honored for their academic achievements.

Traditionally, the selection of State Scholars is based on SAT or ACT scores, as well as class rank at the end of junior year. However, since Elgin Academy does not use a class rank system in evaluating students' performance, their grade point averages and strength of schedule figured into the decision.

The seven students are Emma May, Olivia Oberdorf, Isabella Richardson, Valerie Scimeca, Sarah Summers, Melissa Trudrung, and Devin Üner. They were recognized at an Upper School assembly earlier in the week and will be recognized by the Elgin Academy community at the Honors Convocation in June where each scholar will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement.

While the prestigious recognition does not include a monetary award, recipients are encouraged to cite the honor on applications for college admission and scholarships in addition to completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after Jan. 1. The FAFSA determines eligibility for federal and state aid, including Illinois' $400 million need-based Monetary Award Program (MAP).

Last week marked the third-annual global Hour of Code campaign in honor of Computer Science Education Week, December 7-13, 2015. Upper School students who were interested in learning about coding gathered in the Edwards Hall Learning Center before lunch for a computer science tutorial.Using lessons built around the popular movie Frozen (chosen by student vote over other tutorials based on the new Star Wars movie and the game Minecraft), Computer Science teacher Jim Kidston demonstrated the basics of computer programming using a block-based language that lets you drag and drop code objects, put them together, and run the program. The tutorials are a fun way to help students understand the basics of coding and to introduce them to concepts like sequencing and repetition.Mr. Kidston is hopeful that the students will play around with the tutorials on their own time and that the experience will spark a desire to learn more about computer science. On Friday February 5, the EA WYSE team competed at the Elgin Regional held at Elgin Community College. The team won first place in the 300 Division and will advance to the Sectional held at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. EA took home 18 medals. Prudhvie Gudapati won 1st in Biology, Sarah Summers and Karan Gowda tied for 2nd in Biology. Emma May and Maisy Feeley tied for 1st in Chemistry, Sarah Summers won 2nd, and Frankie Bisconti won 3rd. In Computer Science, Devin Üner took first, Emma May won 2nd, and Val Scimeca won 3rd. In English, Amelia Deering received 1st place, and Henry Stone took home 3rd. In Mathematics, William Wang won 1st place, Val Scimeca won 2nd, and Frankie Bisconti won 3rd. Finally, in Physics, Wiliam Wang won 1st, Devin Üner won 2nd, and Henry Stone won 3rd. Perhaps most impressive is that EA's team scores rivaled that of much larger high schools; had EA competed in the unlimited division for schools larger that 1600 students, EA would have placed 2nd overall. That's another advantage of taking learning personally.
